Join the Global Climate Strike

Starting September 20 –

To those of you who watched the full CNN climate town hall, congratulations, take a break; for the other 99.9% of you who genuinely care and understand the dire need to save the planet but have a normal life that works better with trending highlights and firing retweets than with a seven hour binge-watch, it’s time to step up and join allies across the world in the Global Climate Strike, September 20-27. Luckily for us, there’s a whole week’s worth of events already lined up at the Bay Area Week of Climate Action – get on out there because, no pressure, but the future of humanity is literally depending on you. 

With the Despoiler-in-Chief calling the shots for the United States, we already know there’s cause for worry. But there’s also hope, because millions of people are raising their voices, and even better: youth are leading the way, striking internationally to demand action to address the climate crisis for the week of actions including marches, rallies, and more. Here’s how you can join them and help make all our voices heard:

• Friday, September 20: In the Bay Area, Youth vs. Apocalypse (YVA) and Sunrise Movement Bay Area have organized the youth-led climate strike march on Friday, September 20. Meet at 10 a.m. at 90 7th St., San Francisco: Starting at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, the march will connect targets in government, finance, and energy that contribute to climate breakdown. Read more about why the organizers chose these targets (the link also includes estimated times when the march will reach each target). The action, which many young people will attend, will be non-violent and won’t include property destruction, and no civil disobedience is planned. Read YVA’s demands.
• Saturday, Sept. 21, 1-3 PM: Community Climate Rally and Environmental Action Fair in Walnut Creek. Organized by East Bay Climate Action Network.
• Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7 AM-5 PM: Join the Strike for Climate Justice, hosted by Extinction Rebellion San Francisco Bay Area, joined by other groups. In San Francisco, find location and much more information here.
• Friday, September 27: Join youth and allies to protest Chevron at its global headquarters in San Ramon. Organizers YVA and Idle No More SF Bay plan a vibrant, powerful action demanding that Chevron’s CEO speak to the youth whose future is jeopardized because of Chevron’s drive for profits at the expense of our air, water and climate.
