Last night’s Virginia results were rough: infuriating, frustrating, sad, and scary. We wanted to win all three statewide races and hold onto our House of Delegates majority. We wanted victories for all the progressive values we care about. We worry about what this means for 2022 and 2024.
So what now? First, let’s send our gratitude to all the warriors who fought their hearts out phone-banking to Virginia. And if you need a moment to grieve, we understand: we recommend taking a breath, commiserating with friends, or doing whatever else you need to recharge. We also don’t want to forget the small bright spots: transit nerds’ favorite, Delegate Danica Roem, kept her seat. And it looks possible that the Democrats fended off an outright Republican majority in the House of Delegates: if current trends hold, it will be split 50-50.
Next, let’s turn our anger and sadness into action. We are warriors and protectors. As LaTosha Brown of Black Voters Matter says: “My body is tired but my spirit is relentless.” We can’t change the past, but we can and WILL change the future, and the first step forward is to guarantee that the FTVA passes, so that the 2022 elections are fair!
To re-energize, gather in person! Rally with us for the Freedom to Vote Act outside Sen. Feinstein’s office at Fight Back Fridays!

Last night’s races were a wake-up call. Just as Georgia showed us that it’s possible to win in this environment, Virginia showed us that it’s possible to lose, too. But at least we’re being jolted into action while we still have lots of time to prepare for next year. Let’s pledge now to make sure we win – and win big – in next year’s midterms. We must remember our wins, like Georgia earlier this year, and do what we’ve always done: pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and try again!
Let’s get a running start by organizing NOW. Fill out this IEB Virtual Commit Card to pledge to attend at least three events for the 2022 midterms. And take Indivisible National’s Give No Ground pledge, too. We’re all in this together and we’re all going to get out of this together.
