It’s been an awful week in the news at home and abroad: crisis in Afghanistan, earthquake in Haiti, and troubling Congressional news, too, with For the People Act delays and infrastructure bill blockages. In troubling times, we find that two things can help: taking action, and gathering together (even virtually).
We’re still calling on our Senators daily to end the filibuster. We’ll stand with Representative Barbara Lee and push our representatives to prioritize humanitarian aid to address the crisis in Afghanistan- you can donate miles or see more resources from Indivisible National here. We’d also love to see you at this month’s All Members Meeting- it’s Sunday, August 29th, 1PM-3PM on Zoom: RSVP here.
We’re also still working on three other time-sensitive projects: opposing the recall of Governor Gavin Newsom, electing Janani Ramachandran to the CA Assembly in AD-18, and continuing to push the For the People Act. The AD-18 election is Tuesday, August 31st. Volunteer for Ramachandran’s campaign here for phone banking and here for canvassing.
The recall election is Tuesday, September 14th– in alignment with Newsom’s campaign, we’re voting “No” on question 1, and leaving question 2 blank. Find anti-recall volunteer opportunities (virtual and in-person!) here, and review our article for more on why this recall is BAD for California. See some more FAQs answered here. Ballots arrive this week- check your registration if you haven’t received yours, especially if you’ve recently moved.
We’re also supporting Sierra Club’s letter-writing campaign to President Biden, asking him to tell the Senate to amend the filibuster and pass the For the People Act. Share with friends to get us to one million letter-writers! Click here to get started. Find more democracy-defending actions – and an update on For the People Act progress- in our latest post.
Finally, we know you’ve been working hard for the For the People Act for many months. If you- like us- need reassurance and re-energizing, come to Declaration for American Democracy’s For the People Act Activist call TONIGHT! RSVP here.
