Project 2025. Sounds innocent enough. But it’s really a euphemism — meant to disguise its true intent. It’s a 900 page document crafted by a conglomerate of extreme conservative strategists — with a goal of implementing its recommendations should Trump win in November. And its true intent is to deconstruct the entire edifice our government so it can be rebuilt into an autocratic ultra right-wing machine.
Are you concerned that we are being overly dramatic here? Even hyperbolic?
Can it really be as nefarious as we are claiming?
Yes, it can. And it is.
But don’t take our word for it.
Let’s start by quoting from Project 2025 itself.
“The actions of liberal politicians in Washington have created a desperate need and unique opportunity for conservatives to start undoing the damage the Left has wrought and build a better country for all Americans in 2025.
It is not enough for conservatives to win elections. If we are going to rescue the country from the grip of the radical Left, we need both a governing agenda and the right people in place, ready to carry this agenda out on day one of the next conservative administration.”
Heritage Foundation President Kevin D. Roberts, in Project 2025’s introduction, further explains that one of their main goals is to delete…
“the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (‘SOGI’), diversity, equity, and inclusion (‘DEI’), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights … out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists.”
Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) had this to add:
“Project 2025 offers a playbook for restructuring the federal government in order to accomplish the policy goals of Christian Nationalists. Rolling back the rights of LGBTQ+ people, ending marriage equality and even restricting divorce options, banning abortion and limiting reproductive health care, throwing up roadblocks to racial justice, eliminating the Department of Education and diverting public funds to private religious schools, and redefining religious freedom as a license to discriminate.”
If you still have any warning bells that haven’t gone off yet, consider what Time magazine had to say:
“Led by the right-wing think tank the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is a presidential transition operation—basically a government-in-waiting if former President Donald Trump returns to office. The project relies on what legal scholars call the unitary executive theory, which dismisses the idea that there are three separate branches of government for checks and balances, The New York Times reported. Rather, proponents of the theory argue that Article 2 of the Constitution allows the president to have total authority over the executive branch.
Many critics have labeled Project 2025 as ‘authoritarian.’ The Associated Press called the handbook’s language ‘apocalyptic.’”
And then there’s…
Schedule F
No, this is not a form you attach to your tax return. Rather, it is the most insidious and destructive objective of Project 2025. If successful, it would “reclassify tens of thousands of federal workers as political appointees.” The workers would thus lose their employment protections and could be terminated at the whim of the President. What we’re talking about here is the ability for Trump to fire thousands of non-partisan career civil servants — who work at agencies such NASA, EPA, and the FDA. In some cases, entire agencies would likely be eliminated. The country would lose workers whose expertise serves to protect the safety of our food, medicine, transportation systems, environment and national security. And here’s the kicker: The workers would be replaced by partisans whose main qualification is loyalty to Trump rather than any technical skill — and whose primary goal is to please Trump.
John Oliver highlighted the five-alarm danger here: “Even if Trump does meet resistance from Congress or the courts, he will now have ways to go around them.” With Schedule F in place, Trump will be able to do almost whatever he wants — because there will be no one left in the executive branch of government who will even attempt to stop him. This is how the architects of Project 2025 plan to ensure that their policy goals are carried out.
If this sounds like a nightmare scenario, that’s because it is.
We must stop this
To take in the complete scope of all the damage that Project 2025 will do if enacted, check out Project 2025: Exposing the Far-Right Assault on America. It’s breath-taking — and not in good way.
The only way to guarantee that Project 2025 does not become a reality…is to defeat Donald Trump in November.
One way to do this is to talk about Project 2025 as much as possible. Most voters remain uninformed about what it is and what it hopes to do. As Michelle Goldberg wrote:
“Disaffected Democrats and swing voters are appalled when they learn of Project 2025’s agenda, including on abortion. But a mere 21 percent of them think Republicans will actually carry it out it if they take back power. And they wonder, if the danger of Project 2025’s policies is so acute, ‘why Democrats don’t seem to be speaking out about them or fighting back.’”
Because this election will be so close, every conversation you have with voters helps! Canvassing and phonebanking are especially effective.
We’re especially excited about our plans for Nevada — a swing state that is critical for Biden and the Democrats to win:
- We will be making two canvassing trips to Reno, one each in August and September. Sign up to join us.
- You can also call Nevadans! Join us for Wednesday evening phonebanks, starting in July. Sign up here.
- Finally, come hang out with us to write postcards in a beautiful Oakland backyard. Sign up here.
