Deadline: NOW –
Trump will never concede he lost the election and commit to the peaceful transfer of power. He tried to coerce and bully Georgia’s Secretary of State into fraudulently overturning that state’s presidential election result by “finding” votes for him. While his toadies in Congress tried to stop the electoral vote certification, he incited his supporters to come to the Capitol. When they stormed the Capitol, putting Congress in danger, he did nothing for hours; when he finally told them to go home, after a woman was shot and killed, his message was “We love you. You’re very special. I know how you feel.” It’s time to stop this madness once and for all – before more blood is shed in this blatant conspiracy to overthrow our democracy.
Trump is violating his oath to uphold constitutional government. He is a current and ongoing threat to democracy and justice in America. Representative Ilhan Omar has drawn up articles to impeach Trump, tweeting “[w]e can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.” And Rep. Ted Lieu called for Vice President Pence to start the 25th Amendment process to remove Trump immediately from office. We need our Members of Congress to assert their legitimate and proper authority and apply checks and balances. It’s only days until the Inauguration – but we don’t have days to spare. We need Congress to act, NOW. Congress must remove Trump from office and disqualify him from ever holding federal office again – and hold to account all those who have enabled him.
What to do:
Call your Members of Congress. Tell them: Use every power you have to remove Trump from office, NOW. Congress also must ensure that nothing like this ever happens again – not from Trump, not from Mitch McConnell, not from any would-be tyrant. Check this whip list to see whether your Rep. supports impeachment.
What to say:
My name is _____, my zip code is _____, and I’m a member of Indivisible East Bay. I want _______________ to support the efforts of Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Ted Lieu to remove Donald Trump from office right away, before he pardons anyone else, incites any more violence, or does any further damage. I also want ____________ to censure Republican members of Congress who have falsely cast doubt on the election results and tried to stop the election results from being certified. This includes Mitch McConnell, who supported Trump’s efforts up to the very last minute and set the stage for the GOP to try to overthrow democracy.
Optional: You can add a reason why impeachment is worthwhile even now:
- Every hour Trump remains in office, he does more damage and presents increased danger to democracy and safety. We need to remove him now.
- Conviction on impeachment can and should include a ban from further federal office.
- There must be accountability for Republican Members of Congress who have supported and continue to support Trump’s war against our democracy.
- To fail to impeach in the face of a coup attempt against president-elect Biden and vice president-elect Harris is to negate the meaning of the votes of the American people.

Background
On Saturday, January 2, 2021, Trump called Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, to ask him to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in that state’s presidential election by “finding 11,780 votes” for him. Raffensperger rejected Trump’s bogus conspiracy theories and stood firm: multiple recounts in Georgia confirmed Biden’s win in the state.
Folks, it hardly gets more blatant than this. Tragically, Trump’s followers – both in Congress and in the public – are buying his claims that he didn’t really lose the election and that Congress can’t certify the electors who voted for Biden.
In democracies, people’s votes count. In authoritarian regimes, elections are shams in which people are allowed to vote, but their votes have no bearing on the outcome. It’s no exaggeration to say that if Congress sits back while their peers attempt to delegitimize the election and block the transfer of power, they’re seeking to destroy our democracy. Anyone who behaves as though elections only count when they win must be held accountable – right up to and including the Congress and the President of the United States.
